Why Enrichment Is Essential for Dogs, Cats & Small Animals

We all know our companion animals need physical exercise; however, this is only part of the equation. You prioritise your own mental health, and in the same way, theirs need prioritising too. Mental stimulation is not optional but essential. This ensures they lead fulfilling lives and aren’t labeled as disobedient.

Mental exercise can make animals just as tired as physical exercise. Some of the benefits of mental stimulation include the improvement of cognitive functions and building their confidence (have you ever seen a dog proud of an achievement when you praise them?). It releases stress and improves emotional wellbeing.

Mental exercise can also assist in stopping destructive behaviour (no more chewing couches and shoes), decrease hyperactivity and improve brain development, especially for younger pets. It also keeps them happy and strengthens our bond with them, and who doesn’t want that?

Destructive behaviour is often labeled incorrectly. Dogs often bark excessively or dig holes and knock over the trash – all common signs of boredom. The important thing to note is that all pets need some form of stimulation. The good news? Mental enrichment doesn’t have to be complicated — the right toys can make all the difference.

Items to keep dogs entertained:
  • Puzzle feeders such as snuffle mats, treat balls and interactive boards
  • Lick Mats
  • Durable Chew toys
  •  Hide-and-seek plushies
  • Interactive ball launchers
Mental Stimulation for Cats:
  • Interactive wands
  • Puzzle Feeders
  • Laser pointers
  • Catnip filled items
  • Balls with bells or noise
  • Cat scratchers
Small Pet Enrichment:
  • Running Wheels for hamsters or mice
  • Tunnels and tubes
  • Wooden Chew Toys
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Foraging Toys or puzzle feeders

Bird Toys:
  • Foraging Toys
  • Shreddable toys like wood or coconut
  • Swings, ladders or bungees
  • Noisy toys like bells
  • Mirrors

The key is to rotate toys weekly to keep them new and exciting. These activities are also perfect for rainy days indoors. Mental stimulation is just as important for your pets as it is for you — and essential for helping them live happier, healthier lives.
